WAXAHATCHEE CAN'T DO MUCH

Throughout this unusual time, we’re holding onto the security blanket that is music tighter than ever and we’re especially grateful to those who continue to release new music, such TMR favourite Waxahatchee who plans to unveil her Saint Cloud LP on March 27th. From the upcoming record, we’ve already heard the gently burning ‘Fire’ and soul-searching narrative ‘Lilas’. Now we have a third single to further shape our expectations of Saint Cloud. ‘Can’t Do Much’ is an “extremely unsentimental love song” as Katie Crutchfield puts it, although through listening to the back-porch instrumentals, we can’t help but see past the hesitation and appreciate the intensity and honesty of the songwriter’s feelings for another. As Crutchfield continues, “It was written early on in a relationship, where the feelings were super intense, but also fear or apprehension were sort of keeping me from totally relaxing in it yet. Sort of like 'it's annoying that I love you so much'—totally unromantic, which sort of makes it really romantic to me.” Despite the varied instruments that we can see being played into the lofi studio video, ‘Can’t Do Much’ has a refreshingly unfiltered and uncluttered sensation. - Hannah Thacker   [Photo credit: Molly Matalon]
